Plans and conducts independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of design on a project. Directly performs or administers work of designers and drafters of a small size design group in a particular discipline for a business line technology. This work includes the preparation of layouts, study drawings, detailed 2-D and 3-D Computer Aided Design (CAD) design models and construction drawings.

Assists in the preparation of plans, assigned material requisitions and bid evaluations, and coordinates the assigned work to meet the project schedules. Monitors and checks work for compliance with approved design standards to provide quality design, reliable/safe plant operation and construction economy. Prepares design and drafting procedures to standardize design effort.

Coordinates or makes jobsite visits, as required, to resolve problems and interpret drawings and documents. Reviews or defines engineering scope changes, as required, for project management. Endorses or prepares reports of work progress, as required, for project and discipline use.

Maintains up-to-date skills in Bechtel Standard Computer Applications (BSAPs) relevant to design work and ensures that maximum use is made thereof.

Establishes and maintains communication with design and engineering supervisors in charge of related disciplines and with administrative personnel within the group or project. Consults with equipment suppliers, technical specialists and client representatives as directed to provide and receive technical information.

Plans and conducts independent work that requires judgement in evaluating, selecting, applying, and adapting design on a project under the direction on an engineer. Knows applicable industry standards and codes, accepted design practices, and quality standards for a GBU. Makes decisions concerning problems within the discipline on the project. Represents the discipline on the pojrect and with the client as directed to resolve technical questions.


Specialized courses in drafting, design and engineering practices, and CAD, or a recognized degree in a job related engineering or scientific discipline.

Extensive experience in design and drafting.

Basic knowledge of the application of engineering and construction materials related to the discipline’s design responsibilities e.g. of design and drafting techniques, engineering drawings, graphic arts, 2-D and 3-D CAD, reading of drawings and reproduction methods used by the discipline. Knowledge of applicable industry and regulatory standards, design criteria/practices, codes and quality standards relevant to the discipline. Knowledge of discipline Design Guides, mathematical formulae and design calculations used in the discipline.

Knowledge of technical responsibilities of other groups associated with the total design effort. Knowledge of procedures used for the procurement and quantity control of bulk materials applicable to the discipline.


Bechtel Certification as Designer or Senior Designer is required, or must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

Must be proficient in the use and application of the National Electrical Code.

Proficiency in S3D and SPEL is strongly preferred.

Previous experience on FEEDs or Project Proposals is preferred.

Previous experience preparing estimated quantities, jobhour estimates, and schedule planning is preferred.

Ability to develop innovative ideas to reduce project total installed costs (TIC).

Ability to present technical design issues to customer and supplier, and ability to recommend solution based on knowledge and experience.

10+ years of relevant work experience.


Bechtel Certification as Senior Designer or Supervising Designer is required, or must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

Previous experience on FEEDs or Project Proposals is strongly preferred.

Previous experience preparing estimated quantities, jobhour estimates, and schedule planning is required.

15+ years of relevant work experience.
