Project Overview

Bechtel is building a semiconductor manufacturing plant in New Albany, Ohio. We are partnering with the North America Building Trades Unions and suppliers to create several thousand new jobs and work with local education organizations to implement new training programs that will support the future talent pipeline. Bechtel Manufacturing & Technology, Inc. offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the semiconductor manufacturing, electric vehicle, and data center markets. Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, the M&T global business unit also includes colleagues working in Arizona, Ohio, Texas, India, and additional project locations around the world.

Position Summary

Bechtel is seeking a Deputy Mechanical Resident Engineer (assistant to Lead Mechanical Engineer) to support Project Cardinal in New Albany, OH just outside of Columbus. This position falls within the Manufacturing and Technology Global Business Unit. Role and responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Mechanical Assistant Project Engineer and the Project Engineering Management Team with technical oversight of engineering activities for the engineering discipline(s) as necessary on the project. Has responsibilities for interfacing with other execution centers, interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating the tasks associated with the project.

  • Work directly with our customer(s) and our senior management on matters relating to project engineering progress, quality, scope, and technical/permitting issues.

  • Champion the creation of a work environment, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction on the project.

  • Must be willing to be located on site in New Albany Ohio within 4-5 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with the customer Mechanical engineers to establish requirements, communicate progress, and understand and resolve customer concerns. Participate in routine Mechanical touchpoints/coordination meetings with customer.

  • Help resolve issues in the field (at jobsite) in efficient manner so that construction and startup schedule is not compromised. Assist in resolution/closure of field design change documents and non-conformance reports.

  • Help manage design change, which is significant in this industry. Help ensure that changes that provide limited value and cause “churn” are not pursued. Exhibit contract savviness to assess whether a change is design development or a contractual change and present/articulate position to customer.

  • Work closely and coordinate with a global engineering design team.

  • Provide technical basis for cost estimates/ROMs in order for client to understand impacts of potential changes; provide support for the Trend process for large cost impacts.

  • Participate in and lead working group meetings with customer and Design Partner. Manage meeting agendas, work group topics, actions, and meeting minutes.

  • Assist in resolving plan review comments with Authority Having Jurisdiction.

  • If needed, support bid, evaluation, and award process for engineering subcontract packages.

  • Review key engineering deliverables for the project including drawings, specifications, and supporting calculations.

  • Coordinate and interface as directed with the day-to-day technical work of discipline engineers and field supervision.

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

  • Level One - B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 10 years related experience.

  • Level Two - B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 15 years related experience.

  • At least 2 years experience supervising/managing mechanical engineers is required.

  • In this role, engineer will serve as a “deputy” and will fill in for the Mechanical Assistant Project Engineer when not available.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge in Mechanical (wet/dry) in a semiconductor manufacturing facility is a plus, however, is not absolutely required. Looking for strong mechanical engineer with multidisciplinary experience and leadership experience.

  • Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) project experience with large industrial facilities.

  • Experience working in the field at jobsite.

  • Professional Engineering license is preferred, though not absolutely required.

  • Current/previous Bechtel experience.

  • Experienced in the design of mechanical/process systems in industrial facilities. Examples of system design experience include engineers who have designed systems containing heat exchangers, boilers/chillers, scrubbers, rotating equipment, fuel/natural gas, compressed air, steam/condensate, etc.

  • Knowledge of P&IDs, line sizing calculations, equipment specifications, material requisitions, subcontract packages, technical bid evaluations, design change and field change packages.

  • Knowledge of codes and standards applicable to systems design.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
