Geotechnical engineer to support geotechnical engineering activities for multiple projects/studies/proposals executed out of the Houston, TX or Reston, VA office. Projects currently executed by these offices include LNG terminals, oil refineries, other chemical facilities, power (fossil and nuclear), government and infrastructure (rail, airports, etc.). The incumbent may also be asked to work on projects executed in the Santiago and Brisbane (Australia) offices (alumina refineries, aluminum smelters, copper concentrators). The position will be part of the Geotechnical & Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) group and will be based in Houston, TX or Reston, VA. The successful candidate is expected to work independently, but will report to and receive technical supervision and functional oversight from an Engineering Group Supervisor or another engineer assigned by the Geotechnical Engineering Manager as required. This incumbent will be required to coordinate work tasks with the project Civil, Structural and Architectural (CSA) group and the Principal Engineer.
Position requires working on multiple projects/studies at any given time, preparing subsurface investigations for new and existing facilities, technically directing the work in the field, assigning laboratory tests, and developing geotechnical parameters based on the results of the investigation. Responsiblities include performing and/or checking geotechnical analyses such as stability of soil and rock slopes, bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations, lateral earth pressures, and axial and lateral pile capacities. Responsibilities also include preparation and/or checking of geotechnical engineering reports and presenting the results of the investigations and reports to members of the project team. Work will also involve communication on geotechnical issues with the project team during the engineering design stage of the project. During the construction phase of projects, responsibilities will include overview of earthwork operations, monitoring of pile installation and load testing , inspection of critical foundation subgrade, and monitoring of ground improvement. The work may also involve interfacing with and/or providing oversight of outside geotechnical consultants hired by Bechtel or the Owner to perform these tasks.
The selected candidate is expected to have an interest in and be available to provide field oversight of geotechnical investigations and construction activities.

An M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering with a minimum of 10 years of working experience in that field or a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering and minimum 3 years of experience is needed.
Professional Registration required
Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written skills to communicate with team in preparation of reports, memos, calculations and other documentation
Must be familiar with word processing and spreadsheet, and database applications.
Must be familiar with computer applications such as (or equivalent to) Plaxis, LPILE, GROUP, SLOPE/W, SEEP/W, GRLWEAP, gINT, and have a working knowledge of nuclear regulations (NRC, DOE, etc.).
Must have the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship
Should be willing and have the ability to travel to and remain at jobsites in the United States and overseas on short and long-term assignments.
