This position is for a Senior Rail systems (Traction Power) Engineer who will prepare designs and lead engineering teams in the development and delivery of rail systems portion of an integrated railway comprised of system-wide components. Experience in conceptual, preliminary and final design of traction power system for Light Rail, Heavy Rail, Commuter Rail and High Speed Rail Projects operating on Overhead Contact and Third Rail Systems is must. The Senior Rail systems (Traction Power) Engineer will be responsible for direct production of design work by Bechtel as well as for managing the scope and integration of work assigned to subcontracted design entities. The position will include work supporting business development and delivery of studies and proposals, and may ultimately transition to a project-specific assignment, typically in a lump-sum, design-build project environment. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, and the desire to innovate designs and engineering work processes.
Plan and conduct independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria to rail projects
Prepare conceptual studies, designs, reports, proposals, value engineering studies or alternate technical concepts (ATCs) in accordance with Bechtel Engineering Procedures
Coordinate design development with other departments which may include construction, estimating, project controls, procurement, and contracts management
Perform standard engineering work planning, scheduling, and job hour estimating
Monitor and ensure compliance with project budgets, schedules, quantities and quality requirements
Provide technical direction and assign work to subordinate engineers, designers, and drafters who assist on specific assignments
Review and check work of subordinate engineers
Coordinate and integrate design work between engineering disciplines and other design entities
Interface with clients and stakeholders to make presentations, define project requirements, and obtain contractual and statutory approvals
Assist in on-the-job-training of assigned personnel and provide input for their performance evaluations.
Prepare procurement and subcontract requisition documents and perform associated technical bid evaluations
Prepare and/or assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders
Resolve technical issues with construction and travel to the field to assist as required
Support the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
Co-operate in all matters relating to health and safety, including following safe working procedures at all times
Make business trips, or potentially relocate, to construction site, project office or client location as required
Detailed knowledge of rail Traction Power systems engineering, including the following:
Extensive knowledge of relevant IEEE, IEC, EN, CSA, AREMA industry codes, standards and regulations for Traction Power System.
Prepare or supervise traction power system (TPS) simulations and calculations for substation location, traction power equipment sizing, load flow, short circuit, TPS load demand, contingency analysis, voltage drop in conductors, voltage rise of the rails, track bonding, time table analysis, wayside energy storage including automatic receptivity unit, regenerative braking system energy storage.
Support site selection efforts for TPS substations.
Prepare electrical single line, metering and relay diagrams for TPS.
Prepare traction power equipment specifications.
Prepare sectionalizing diagrams.
Prepare TPS system wide protection logics, including Emergency Trip System and schematics.
Prepare TPS/PLC/SCADA interfaces and protection system.
Prepare optimal TPS substation layouts, coordinated with other disciplines
Prepare conductor sizing, cable sizing and raceway design guidelines for TPS.
Prepare TPS grounding and bonding design
Prepare protection relay calculations, arc flash analysis and relay settings for TPS.
Prepare surge protection and coordination studies.
Prepare EMI and harmonic analysis studies for TPS.
Knowledge of revenue vehicle specifications and selection.
Review shop drawings, witness factory acceptance tests.
Prepare Factory and Field Test requirements for TPS equipment.
Prepare Inspection and Test Plans (ITP) for TPS equipment.
Prepare project specific design guide and narratives for TPS

Accountable for the delivery of rail systems portion of an integrated railway comprised of system-wide components
Reviewing and assessing technical submissions from Professional Service Consultants (PSCs) determining compliance with standards and requirements
Coordinates rail systems infrastructure design with other engineering specialties, including signaling and traction power
Responsible for maintaining the quality of design and making the facility safe for construction and operations personnel
Establish detailed project scope when required, including basic engineering criteria and assumptions
Has broad working knowledge of precedents in the rail industry.
Has extensive experience in performing and managing self-perform rail TPSS design work
Has experience with cold weather design
Has experience with engineering work planning, scheduling and cost estimating,
Thorough knowledge of discipline engineering techniques, design of engineered systems, and engineering and calculations.
Knowledge of current computer applications for engineering and design including appropriate knowledge of:
Siemens sitras sidytrac
CDEGS including Hifreq module
MS Office Suite and relevant Bechtel Standard Computer Applications to perform the work.
Understanding of engineering planning and control methods
Demonstrated Value Engineering experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
Minimum fifteen (15) years’ experience in the rail systems industry engineering design
US Professional Engineering (PE) license in Electrical Engineering or Professional Engineering Registration in Canadian Province
Detailed technical knowledge of rail systems, engineering calculations, application of engineering and construction methods and materials. Knowledge of the infrastructure and interconnections with these systems is required to properly engineer these interfaces
Extensive knowledge of engineering design principles required for achieving optimal design outputs
Practical work experience sufficient to demonstrate competence and breadth in Rail systems engineering design
Experience in the supervision of less experienced engineers and CAD designers
Experience and proficiency with design software for Traction Power systems.
Experience in customer-facing roles, presenting to customers and working with authorities having jurisdiction
Must have the right to work and remain in the US without visa sponsorship
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Master’s degree in Electrical, Engineering from an accredited college or university
Professional Engineering License/Registration in both the US and Canada
Active participation in professional association(s) for transportation engineering
