Bechtel is designing, constructing and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington state. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.
The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.
The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) and AECOM. WTCC is a subcontractor to BNI, the prime contractor, to deliver the construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project.
This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Selected applicant needs to be willing and able to work a nightshift schedule, M-Th 5:30 pm to 4:00 am, as well as work overtime as needed.
Assists in the integration of specialized safety requirements into the planning, permitting, design, and construction of Bechtel projects. Interprets specialized requirements, evaluates and applies specialized scientific principles, and formulates scopes of work, plans, and methodologies suitable for achieving the desired objectives. Provides technical assistance to other Safety Services Specialists/Engineers.
Provides technical support to safety studies and assessments and other applicable safety and health reviews.
Provides specialized safety input to engineering, construction, and subcontracts, thus ensuring that safety requirements are properly integrated into project planning, design criteria, construction plans and specifications and subcontracts.
Participates in meetings, as required, with customers, project team members, and contractors/subcontractors to advise them of specialized safety and health requirements that may affect project design, construction schedule, and cost.
Assists in drafting ES&H Plans, project specific safety procedures, project specific implementation plans (e.g., evacuation plans, safety training plans and programs, People Based Safety), and technical reports.
Conducts safety inspections of project construction activities to monitor compliance with safety requirements including contractual commitments, permits, the project’s ES&H plan, and other applicable safety plans.
Conduct Industrial Hygiene monitoring with guidance and direction from the Industrial Hygienist.
Maintains relationships with internal organizations (e.g., engineering, construction, and subcontracts), customer, and contractor/subcontractor representatives to coordinate technical/scientific issues and implementation of safety functions into project proposals, designs, and construction plans.
Bachelor’s degree in ES&H/Management or related science/engineering field from an accredited college or university and 1 year of safety related experience
Or a Master’s degree in ES&H/Management or related science/engineering field from an accredited college or university
Or In lieu of formal degree, 7 years of progressive related safety experience.
Related experience includes, but is not limited to, working in conjunction with Safety and Health, Safety Committees, and/or VPP.
Basic knowledge of ES&H functions and ES&H Core Processes.
Basic knowledge of governmental ES&H standards, procedures, rules and regulations.
Basic skills in verbal and written communication.
Basic knowledge of software applications creating spreadsheets with mathematical functions, and enhancing presentation reports.
Knowledge of construction planning, estimating, procedures, and subcontractors or consultants.
Knowledge of safety inspections/assessments during construction.
Knowledge of hazardous materials and physical risk exposures and Personal Protective Equipment standards as well as People Based Safety processes and procedures.
Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check which includes verification of employment and education. Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.

Experience in safety engineering, health physics, industrial hygiene, or environmental compliance activities.
Knowledge of Bechtel standard computer applications.
Knowledge of Bechtel’s organization structure, functions, and administrative procedures.
Prior experience working in a government or nuclear power environment.
