Bechtel is designing, constructing and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington state. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.
The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.
This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work night shift (5:30pm to 4:00am) and weekends as needed.
Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, adaptation, and modification of standard techniques, guidelines, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to startup, maintenance, operation, or testing. Receives technical and administrative supervision from a Startup Engineer or Startup Engineering Supervisor. Provides technical guidance or at times overall project startup supervision and assigns work to project startup engineers, technicians, crafts and others who are performing specific assignments. Coordinates with client, suppliers, regulatory agencies, project management, engineering, and field personnel as required to fulfill job requirements.
Principal responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of startup, operations, or maintenance for a project, including reviews of designs for plant operability and safety and jobsite precommissioning and startup assignments as directed. May also perform field support duties, including by not limited to field changes, design changes, non-conformance reports, condition reports, assessments, as needed to support the overall Startup program. Performs work that involves conventional practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting requirements, unsuitability of conventional methods, or difficult coordination requirements.
Assists with the preparation of Startup test procedures.
Plans, guides, or prepares project administrative and technical documents as required for startup, maintenance (refurbishment), or testing.
Coordinates startup between project engineering, construction, plant operations, specialty staff groups, clients, and vendors.
Assumes a lead role over other engineers for specific tasks as assigned. May direct overall startup activities on specific assignments.This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC. Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and 6 years of professional, related experience or in lieu of a degree, high school diploma or equivalent and 12 years of progressively responsible experience. Minimum Qualifications
Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check which includes verification of employment and education. Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.
Technical knowledge in the application of engineering principles and processes.
Experience in the application of the following Systems Engineering Principles: Requirements management, interface control including integration with internal and external stakeholders, and configuration management in both EPC and Operating environments.
Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, and design criteria
Proficiency in oral and written communications
Strong organizational and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, lead, and monitor a wide variety of team efforts to their successful conclusion.
Proficiency in use of computer applications including Microsoft Office software Preferred Qualifications
Possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship
Previous or current experience in Startup and/or a DOE project
Minimum of 1 year testing experience
