Job Summary:

In this role, you will provide on-site project support and technical consultation to understand daily equipment challenges. You will perform audits, assist with product training, initiate requisitions for field purchases, and review cost estimates, vendor bids, and project controls documents. Your advice will help solve challenges to ensure that equipment quality, quantity, and safety requirements can be met.

Major Responsibilities:

The Machine Control Specialist duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manage all machine control operations globally

  • Establish, develop, and manage teams of mc field technicians that provide on-site support to projects, both domestic and international

  • Develop and manage a global, multi-tier training program for end users and construction management team members. Leverage technology in creating training programs; e-Learning, social media, etc.

  • Prepare surface models and train mc technicians on how to prepare surface models, etc.

  • Install and commission heavy equipment mc and GNSS components

  • Attend Industry conferences and participate on advisory committees

  • Establish the “Bechtel Machine Control Operations Center of Excellence” at BEO in Sugarland, TX. Perform research and implement cutting edge technology and industry best practice

  • Responsible for evaluation, and implementation of new and emerging technologies

  • Promote the use of mc internally on Bechtel project

Education and Experience Requirements:

Engineering/Technical degree and 7 years experience in heavy construction/industrial surveying, involving a mix of field and office duties with modern instruments and software, mostly in the machine control arena with at least 5 years supervisory experience or 15 years experience (in lieu of a degree), with at least 5 years supervisory experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Additional Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of engineering and construction methods and processes customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience

  • Displays effective communications skills crucial to motivating team members and presenting plans in a clear and concise manner

  • Dynamic thinker with the desire to lead, motivate and mentor teams

  • Self-starter with the ability to set standards of excellence in leadership, safety, quality and productivity

  • Knowledge of construction survey principles

  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to heavy construction/industrial surveying and machine control operations, field & office activities

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment, able to formulate a working relationship with construction team members, other departments, contractors and survey functional management

  • Demonstrated experience working my multiple OEM’s: Trimble, CAT, Leica, Topcon, Volvo, Vermeer, Komatsu, John Deere, etc.

  • Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications

  • Excellent problem-solving ability

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Engineering/Survey CAD software, including generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and volumes computations

  • Demonstrated experience in trouble shooting and solving technical problems

  • Demonstrated experience working with dissatisfied customers and the ability to resolve issues and improve our processes

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the preparation of surface models utilizing Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or other Civil/Survey software

  • General awareness of environmental laws

  • Awareness of government compliance standards

Preferred Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Bechtel construction procedures

  • Experience operating heavy equipment

  • Experience supervising Bechtel Craft

  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Incidents” safety program. Must have a strong drive toward Safety, both on and off the job, a commitment to seeing everyone go home each day as well and healthy as they came to work that day

  • Knowledge of Bechtel quality standards. Must have a solid record of successful project completion with little to zero rework
