Bechtel, a global leader in project management, engineering, procurement and construction, has been selected by WSA Co as its Delivery Partner and Project Manager (Definition) for the Western Sydney Airport, a $5.3 billion greenfield facility in Badgerys Creek, New South Wales. This position is for an Architect Lead who will act as the discipline lead within the design management team of an airport client. The role will oversee any aviation architectural related work to ensure consistency with client objectives, consistency with process and procedure and progression toward discipline goals. Aviation buildings will include terminal buildings, maintenance facilities and support/services buildings.
The Architect Lead is responsible for direct production of design briefs, technical tender documents and providing general technical architectural advice. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities and experience in architecture/ engineering work processes, design management including BIM modeling.
Plan and conduct independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of architectural techniques, procedures and criteria to the buildings that are part of aviation projects.
Prepare briefs for feasibility studies and design production, reports, value engineering studies or alternate technical concepts (ATCs) in accordance with Bechtel Engineering Procedures.
Coordinate design development with other departments which may include construction, estimating, project controls, procurement and contracts management.
Understand and perform the standard architectural work planning, scheduling and job hour estimating process; conduct independent work requiring judgment in the application of design techniques.
Monitor and ensure compliance with project budgets, schedules, quantities and quality requirements.
Review key design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings and change orders for the project.
Interface with clients and stakeholders to make presentations, define project requirements and obtain contractual and statutory approvals.
Prepare procurement and subcontract requisition documents and perform associated technical bid evaluations.
Prepare and/or assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.
Resolve technical issues with construction and travel to the project’s site to assist as required.
Support the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation and job satisfaction.
Make business trips, or potentially relocate, to construction site, project office or client location as required.
Knowledge of architectural design, production techniques, building materials and construction methods for development of aviation building project deliverables.
Understands technical issues and cost related to selection of design features and unique architectural requirements.
Broad knowledge of the building industry, regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to aviation buildings architectural work.
Experienced with the practices and procedures of International Design Codes and Standards.
Has interface experience with engineering work.
Skilled in oral and written communication.
Demonstrated graphic presentation skills.
Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions.
Understanding of engineering planning and control methods.
Experienced with producing a full, well-coordinated, detailed set of architectural construction documents.
Experienced with coordinating a multi-discipline design team.
Experienced with managing knowledge of sustainability and its integration into the design and the construction of aviation buildings.
Skilled in assessing the scope of problems and developing practical solutions.
Familiar with discipline-specific Autodesk Design suite (e.g. Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks) design workflows and impacts to discipline productivity, schedule, budget and staffing plans.
Has a working knowledge of Autodesk design suite (Revit, AutoCAD) and is proficient in model viewing software (e.g. Autodesk Navisworks) to navigate the 3D model for review, coordination and guidance of physical model development decisions.
Leads formal and informal 3D model reviews.
Experienced with complex/FOAK building design evolution and interfaces with other design disciplines such that he/she is able to predict and safeguard against multidisciplinary design conflicts and space allocation shortfalls.
Experienced with managing the development of Revit families and detail libraries.
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from an accredited college or university.
Minimum of ten(10) years’ experience in architectural design of buildings, including experience with aviation projects.
Professional Architects Registration.
Practical work experience sufficient to demonstrate competence and breadth in architectural design.
Experience in customer-facing roles, presenting to customers and working with authorities having jurisdiction.
Must have the right to work and remain in Australia without visa sponsorship.
Master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited college or university.
Professional Architectural Registration.
Active participation in professional association(s) for architecture.
