Job Summary

Bechtel, a global leader in project management, engineering, procurement and construction, has been selected by WSA Co as its Delivery Partner and Project Manager (Definition) for the Western Sydney Airport, a $5.3 billion greenfield facility in Badgerys Creek, New South Wales. This will be a landmark project for both New South Wales and Australia, and is due for completion at the end of 2026.

Western Sydney Airport will provide much-needed additional aviation capacity to meet growing demand in the Sydney basin and improve access to flights for people in Western Sydney. The Electrical Lead will plan, coordinate, integrate and direct activities and has technical accountability for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating the Electrical engineering work on a large, complex Airport project. The work elements include Electrical systems, Electrical equipment, lighting systems, communications and fire detection. The Electrical Lead is accountable for the timely delivery of the Design work packages developed by Third Party engineering consultants and/or design firms. Reports to the Design Manager and ensures the designers deliver to the Project requirements and schedule.

Job Responsibilities

  • Plans, and coordinates phases of electrical engineering work including the strategic planning, design, problem analysis, formation and coordination of design requirements.

  • Keeps informed on the status of project issues involving assigned personnel with respect to schedule, budget, work quality and client satisfaction, and contributes leadership, experience and expertise in the solution of difficult problems.

  • Reporting to the Design Manager on Engineering performance on cost, progress and technical issues.

  • Plans, coordinates or reviews equipment or work specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for equipment.

  • Coordinates electrical engineering efforts with other engineering disciplines, with the client, suppliers, and consultants.

  • When delegated, assumes a sub-contractor technical representative role with technical services providers on behalf of the client.

  • Prepares letters to technical services providers and the client.

  • Assists in the preparation of services briefs and commercial requirements for technical services providers, consultants and contractors.

  • Assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

  • Thorough knowledge of electrical engineering techniques, the design of engineered systems, and engineering and design calculations.

  • Understands the application of Engineering Department Procedures, relevant Bechtel design guides. Broad knowledge of the application of engineering to plant constructability as applied to construction methods and materials.

  • Experience with electrical design and construction of a major airport.

  • Working knowledge of engineering planning and control methods (including computerized methods), scheduling and cost estimating.

  • Understanding of the roles played by other departments on projects including basic construction practices and the economics involved.

  • Understanding of industry and regulatory codes and standards and design criteria pertinent to electrical engineering.

  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication including technical writing, communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions.

  • A professional license in an engineering discipline from a recognized licensing board

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience utilizing BIM models and BIM execution methodologies
